Cool Events Here And Elsewhere This Weekend

Ah, the Stony Creek Quarry, a special place and it beckons this fall weekend. A book also beckons, one about Branford’s Civil War soldiers written by Town Historian Jane Bouley. There’s a nature walk, too. What better time than now?

Saturday, Oct. 25

Stony Creek Quarry Tour, Quarry Road, Branford. Tour benefits the Guilford Keeping Society and the Stony Creek Museum. Unk DaRos and Carl Balestracci, both quarry historians and descendants of quarrymen, will share stories of the quarry’s history. Both are former first selectman, DaRos of Branford, Balestracci of Guilford. Tour begins at 11 a.m. No children under 10. Tickets are $15. Booksigning: Branford’s Civil War Soldiers, North Branford & Northford 

Town historian Jane Bouley will sign copies of her new book, which is a detailed chronology of the 10th, 15th, and 27th Connecticut Volunteer Regiments. Photographs and mementos have been on display throughout the month. Event takes place at the Blackstone Memorial Library, 758 Main St., from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Fall Foliage Walk at Hammer and Sliney Preserves. Sponsored by the Branford Land Trust.

Walk leader Truman Sherk knows the history and botany of the property. Truman is a biologist who grew up in Branford and has been actively involved in the Branford Land Trust for many years. It should be a fun walk for both youngsters and adults. Walk begins at 10 a.m. (Rain date: October 26). Meet and park at the lot behind Jalapeno Heaven Restaurant (corner of North Main Street and Cherry Hill Road). Free.

Holidaze: The Real Story of Halloween, Thanksgiving & Christmas (exhibit)

Henry Whitfield State Museum
248 Old Whitfield St., Guilford, CT

Explore the origins and myths of popular holidays. Admission to the exhibit includes self-guided tours of the 1639 Whitfield House. Event takes places on Sunday as well. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Free parking.

Sunday, Oct. 26

S’mores on the Shore

The Madison Beach Hotel, 94 West Wharf Road, hosts this event, providing the fire, the ingredients and yes, the beach. 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. (weather permitting)
