Art? Let’s welcome a new artists’ co-op in town. And Crafts? Yes, an arts and crafts fair, along with a community gardens plant sale, is on tap on the Green. And if you want a chance to Dunk-A-Cop, this, too, can be accomplished this weekend.

Branford Art Center Gallery & Workshop Opens

Artists and a local realtor have bonded together to give local artists a place of their own as they once had back in the day of Bittersweet Farm. This brand new art center gallery and workshop will open with a reception at the site of the former Village Shoppe, 1229 Main St. Come meet the artists and Greg Robins, the realtor who had an idea that this special place would make a great gallery. Event gets underway at 7 p.m.

Saturday, May 16

Branford Arts and Crafts Fair 

The Green will be colorful with tents of artists and crafters from all over the state, all offering a wide variety of beautifully made items. You will find handmade jewelry, clothing, seashell wreaths, soap sculptures and more. Proceeds go to Branford Cares, a non-profit organization that provides basic needs in the community. Admission: Free. Event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Branford Community Gardens Spring Plant Sale 

This is a special sale and it will also take place on the Green from 10 a. m. to 1:30 p.m. You will find assorted perennials, shrubs, houseplants, and vegetable, herb and flower seedlings in various sizes and for various prices. 

Stone Walls

Head to Guilford to hear UConn professor Robert Thorson discuss the role of stone walls in the history of New England life. Lecture begins at 1:30 p.m. at the Guilford Free Library, 67 Park St. This is a three-part program, including one for children. Reservations required for Thorson’s talk. Call 203 – 453-8282 to reserve a place.

Shoreline Spring Festival

You can also head up the shoreline to the historic Madison Green to find the town’s festival today. It is sponsored by Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Society and brings together high end arts and crafts, fair trade, and community organizations.

Dunk- A- Cop

Branford police officers will wait in line today to get dunked in a dunk tank. The reason? They want to raise money for the athletes of Special Olympics Connecticut. You can help dunk your favorite, or least favorite Branford police officer. There are also activities for kids of all ages, including face painting, balloon animals, and other curious creatures. Food provided by Shoreline Prime and other local vendors. Event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission Free. Venue? Shoreline Prime Meats & Deli, 103 North Main St.

Hard Hat Tour of Legacy Theatre

Take a tour of the Legacy Theatre area, with an intimate talk inside the building with Design/Build team Alliance Theater Construction and Consulting, followed by a tour of the completely renovated neighboring George Victor Artist Cottage. Event starts at 2:30 p.m. at 128 Thimble Island Road in Stony Creek.
