This is the weekend to be out and about. There’s a great tour of the Stony Creek Quarry, a puppy fundraiser that is four paws to the wind, a half-marathon that ends at the new Stony Creek Brewery and on Monday, a terrific Tip-A-Cop fundraiser for the Special Olympics at Lenny’s restaurant.

Friday, May 29

If you have never been on a tour of the historic Stony Creek Quarry, this is the weekend to try it. Former first selectmen, Carl Balestracci (pictured) (Guilford) and Unk DaRos (Branford), quarry historians and story tellers, as well as quarry staff member Stacy Mancini will lead the tour.

Here is DaRos on a previous tour. The proceeds will benefit both historic organizations. Tickets are $15 at the quarry, located at 99 Quarry Road in Branford. Because of the rough terrain, children 10 and under will not be admitted. We suggest that those who might have trouble standing for an hour might like to bring a folding chair. Tour begins at 11 a.m. and is limited to 100 people.

Puppy Palooza

The first annual Puppy Palooza, a fundraiser for man’s best friend, gets underway at 6 p.m. and goes to closing time at Anna Liffeys Irish Pub, 17 Whitney Ave., New Haven. The Puppy Palooza, sponsored by Branford’s Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter, will feature live bands, food, drink, prizes and all sorts of contests. Tickets at the door are $18.

Film at the Blackstone

OutRUN 38, a community of athletes dedicated to raising funds and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis, holds its first Branford half marathon, beginning at 7:30 a.m. at Hammer Field, 155 Meadow St. The 13.1 mile course takes runners across the scenic coastline and into Stony Creek. Runners will enter the Stony Creek area via Leetes Island Road (near the Branford Evangelical Free Church) and then head south onto Thimble Islands Road, leaving Stony Creek via the trolley trail. Runners will stay on the left side of the road but anticipate traffic and pedestrian congestion in this area. The race ends at the new Stony Creek Brewery where runners will be appropriately rewarded. Registration begins at 6 a.m. Details here.
