Cool Events Here & Elsewhere On July 4th Weekend

With parades, fireworks, concerts and backyard music of all kinds, shoreline towns, especially Madison, will celebrate Independence Day this weekend with a variety of public events.

In honor of the Declaration of Independence, the town of Madison holds three major events on Independence Day weekend, including a fireworks display, a parade and a concert. 

Friday, July 3

Independence Day Fireworks

}Madison’s annual fireworks display begins at about 9:30 p.m. at the Madison Surf Club. Folks are encouraged to arrive early. Click on the town’s website for information about parking and road closures regarding these events. 

Saturday, July 4

This is the day to read the Declaration of Independence and to think about one of its most important sentences: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Madison Parade

Madison’s annual Independence Day parade gets underway at 11 a.m. The parade will proceed west on Boston Post Road (Route 1) from Samson Rock Drive to the West Wharf Road and will end at the Surf Club.

Independence Day Walk 

Branford’s Shoreline Greenway Trail Independence Day walk will be held today. Wear your red, white and blue, bring your children, and meet at the end of Tilcon Road. Flags will be handed out. Walk begins at 10 a.m. and is approximately two miles in length. Visit the trail’s website or call Leo Cristofar at 203 – 214-5824 for further information.

Independence Day Church Barbeque

Visit the lawn of Church of Christ Congregational Church, 192 Thimble Islands Road in Stony Creek to attend this great event. It gets underway at 11 a.m. and ends at 1:30 p.m. $7 admission. For additional information call 203 – 488-7827.

Concert on the Madison Green 

The Concert on the Madison Green starts at 5 p.m. with the Youth Symphony. The concert on the Green is an alcohol-free event. Check the town website for information on parking and closed roads.

Sunday, July 5

Concert: The Connecticut Washboard, VFW Hall, 104 Mill Road, Guilford. Tickets, $40. Event runs from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Saturday, July 11

Guilford Fireworks

Guilford Fireworks will be held at the Guilford Fairgrounds at Lovers Lane and Stonehouse Lane. They will follow the Community Picnic at the Town Green from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Rain date is Sunday, July 12, at 7:30 p.m.

Vets Job Fair
Take a Vet Fishing” is sponsoring a job fair for veterans to be held at the First Congregational Church, 1009 Main St., on Tuesday, July 14, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Open to veterans only. Spread the word.

20th Annual Environmental Day Camp for Kids

Every summer for the past 20 years, the Branford Land Trust has sponsored an Environmental Day Camp for Kids. This year’s camp will be held on July 23 and 24. Participants may choose to attend either Thursday or Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

Since its inception, more than 800 children have participated in the camp, which gives kids ages 5 to 9 an opportunity to explore the natural wonders of Long Island Sound and its associated habitats.

Held each summer at the Killam’s Point Conference Center, the day-long camp includes a variety of activities including tide pools and forest exploration, touch tanks, nature crafts and games, live birds, amphibians and reptiles, music, music, and more. Registration is required, and participants are provided with an agenda, map and list of things to bring. Here is the registration form.
