Cool Events Here & Elsewhere This Weekend

Autumn is in the air and those with four paws know it. This is a weekend to be outdoors. We hear the rain scheduled for Saturday may hold off until late afternoon. Fingers crossed. This week take your dog, cat or even your bird, to the Branford Green for the St. Francis of Assisi Blessing of the Animals. Or head to Guilford for the annual Harvest Festival and/or the make-your-own scarecrow event at Bishops. 

Friday, Oct. 3

ARTSPACE presents its annual city-wide Open Studios event this month, from Oct. 2 to 26. The grand opening is tonight from 5 p.m. on at 50 Orange St. Admission is free. The open studios event engages a variety of arts produced by local artists from the city and the shoreline. The event turns 30 this year. Click here for detailed information.

Saturday, Oct. 4.

Ecology Park Opens in Branford. Say farewell to the Branford town dump and welcome to Ecology Park. The public is invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 100 Tabor Drive at the intersection of Tabor Drive and Marshall Road. There are walking trails, a gazebo and wonderful views. Event gets underway at 10:30 a.m.

The Annual Harvest Festival on the Guilford Green: Crafts Fair, Precious Pets Contest, Beautiful Baby Contest, and the festival’s famous Apple Crisp. The event is hosted by the Guilford Civic Women’s Club. Opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 4 p.m.

The First Little Kids Fun Fair” gets underway on the Branford Town Green at 10 a.m. Event runs for six hours. Bring your little ones (ages seven and under) to the event. There will be lots of dancing with the Walsh Intermediate School Dance Team leading the way. Admission is free. 

Create a Scarecrow. Take the kids and head for Bishops Orchards in Guilford to make your own scarecrow. This family and fundraising event helps Branford’s Community Dining Room. The event takes place each weekend (Saturday and Sunday) in October and on Columbus Day, Monday, Oct 13. Kids can also glitter up with tattoos and face painting.

Craft Fair, St. Mary School, 62 Cedar St. Fair opens at 9 a.m. and runs to 3 p.m. Fun things. 

Sunday, Oct. 5

Animal Awareness Day. Come to the Branford town Green for the Blessing of the Animals, a Dog Walk led by the New Britain Rock Cats Mascot, A Look-Alike Contest, live music and great food. This is Branford’s Annual Animal Awareness Day and it is sponsored by the Dan Cosgrove Animal Center and the Branford Compassion Club. Branford Town Green, Noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

The Keeping Society’s 53rd Annual Antiques Show gets underway in Guilford at the Thomas Griswold House Museum, 171 Boston St., at 10 a.m. Over 50 top antique dealers with wares ranging from 18th century to mid-century modern will be on hand. Get a free antique appraisal with your $7 entry fee. Each additional appraisal, $7 (three items max.) Also watch a blacksmith at work and take a tour of the 1774 Thomas Griswold House. Rain or shine.
