Cool Events Here & Elsewhere This Weekend

A fun weekend is on the way and the Blackstone Library is the place to be for fantasy, adventure and surprise as Halloween debuts. Or head to New Haven’s great Goffe Street Armory where City-Wide Open Studios artists show their work. Or if you’re a garlic lover, take a trip to the Garlic and Harvest Festival, now celebrating its 10th year.

Saturday, Oct. 11

Branford Walk Like MADD. Mothers Against Drunk Driving walk starts at Town Hall at 9:30 a.m. and goes to 1 p.m. The walk is dedicated to Lisa DelPrete, who was killed on April 8, 2011 by a drunk driver. Hogwarts Halloween @ Blackstone Library, 758 Main St. Event gets underway at 10 a.m. For the next two hours children attending one of four sessions will feel as if they have entered the halls of Hogwarts. Drop your child off. Admission is $25 per child. Costumes are encouraged. For children ages 6 and up. Visit blackstonehalloween.org to reserve your child’s place. 

ARTSPACE presents its annual open studios event this month. This weekend visit the Alternative Space at The Goffe Street Armory. The Alternative Space weekend offers artists a unique backdrop to showcase their talents. For the second time, this year’s exhibition will take place at the Goffe Street Armory (290 Goffe St. in New Haven). The 200,000 square feet of space is full of rich New Haven history. Open between noon and 6 p.m. and Sunday as well. 

Hint of Hogwarts for Adults
Hogwarts Halloween at the Blackstone Library features events for kids during the day, but Saturday evening from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., the library becomes an exquisite place to be. Join us for this sinfully delightful evening that bubbles over with food, drinks, and fun, including local craft beer from Branford’s own Stony Creek Brewery. Stroll through the Great Hall after hours, visit the Potions room, meet the Hogwarts faculty, and try your own exhilarating broom ride around the campus with the virtual Quiddich experience!” Tickets are $50 per person. All proceeds support children’s programming at the library. Visit blackstonehalloween.org to purchase tickets.

Diane Taraz in Concert at the First Congregational Church of Branford, 1009 Main St. The Branford Folk Music Society concert featuring the singer and her guitar begins at 8 p.m. Admission is $15, $12 for Folk Music Society members and $5 for children. For more information, call 203 – 488-7715. 

Garlic & Harvest Festival. Garlic fans enjoy the 10th annual festival at the Bethlehem Fairgrounds on Route 61 in Bethlehem. Festival takes place on Sunday as well, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Take in garlic cooking demonstrations, stay for a live band performance, and learn how to grow garlic. Many free samples. Columbus Day Parade kicks off in North Haven this year. The parade rotates each year through the towns of Branford, East Haven, New Haven, Hamden, West Haven, and North Haven. Branford joined the rotation last year. The parade begins at 1 p.m. and follows a route past the Town Hall, reviewing stand and the town Green.
