Cool Events Here & Elsewhere This Weekend

Summer? Fall? A bit of both? Saturday and Sunday are great days to be outdoors. The weekend offers a bird walk, a conversation about feral cats and a view of scarecrows on the Branford Green. Jazz, too. Head to Hamden where the town’s art commission welcomes the Hot Cat Jazz Band. 

Saturday, Oct 18

Fall Bird Walk at Branford Supply Ponds.

Walk leader Paul Wolter, an avid birder, will help identify the birds by sight and by call. Bring the kids. The walk begins at 8 a.m. and is sponsored by the Branford Land Trust. Meet at the main parking area. From Route 1 take Mill Plain Road and then the first left onto Short Rocks Road, or take Chestnut Street, which goes directly into the preserve. Admission: Free.

Bauer Park Harvest Festival. If you and the kids want to visit a country fair this weekend, head to nearby Madison for pony and hay rides at a 19th century farm. The Bauer Park Harvest Festival will also host ShoreGrass, a Branford-based music group. Music is at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. at Bauer Park, 261 Copse Road. Admission: Free.

Scarecrows On The Branford Green. Come visit with the scarecrows, courtesy of the Branford Garden Club and various restaurants and other establishments around town. 

Connecticut Lore: Strange, Off-Kilter, & Full or Surprises
Delve into Connecticut’s haunted history with author Zachary Lamothe. Visit abandoned Norwich State Hospital, Daniel’s Village, hear stories of demonic possessions, and discover other mysteries. Talk begins at high noon at the Blackstone Memorial Library, 758 Main St. Admission: Free.

Help the Ferals Out

The Branford Compassion Club needs cat food for feral cats for the fall and winter seasons. Event coincides with National Feral Cat Day to promote compassion for feral cats coast to coast. Monetary donations and/or donations of unopened canned (pate) and dry cat food (dye free) can be dropped off at the Branford Compassion Club Feline Rescue and Adoption Center, 2037 Foxon Road, North Branford, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Sophisti-Cat Fashion Show & Brunch

The Branford Compassion Club has another event this weekend. The non-profit feline rescue and adoption organization hosts its benefit Sophisti-Cat Fashion Show & Brunch at the Pine Orchard Yacht Club. Miss Connecticut and other surprise celebrity models from the area will be modeling fashions from Branford’s Coco’s on the Green. Admission is $45. See [email protected]. Sherlock Holmes & the Adventure of the Speckled Band

The East Haddam Stage Company invites you to become part of the ‘studio audience’ at its live murder mystery ‘radio’ show!  Visit the Blackstone Memorial Library, scene of mystery this weekend.  You’ll learn about CT native William Gillette’s contribution to the Sherlock Holmes oeuvre and watch & participate in a live murder mystery radio show played by 4 actors portraying 7 characters, followed by a Q&A. Events starts at 2 p.m. Admission: Free.

Hot Cat Jazz Band Plays Cool Tunes
The Hamden Art Commission’s new jazz season opens this Sunday with the Wethersfield Hot Cat Jazz Band. The group features Swing, Big Band and Dixieland variations. The concert is held at the Thornton Wilder Hall in the Miller Cultural Complex, 2901 Dixwell Ave. General admission is $7. Seniors, students and children under 12 pay $5. Tickets sold at the door. Jazz begins at 2 p.m.
