Yes, even in frigid weather there are cool events. If you are game head to New Haven for a great concert or learn how to track animals, courtesy of the Branford Land Trust or stay home and read a good book. 

Friday, February 20

EagleWatch & Winter Wildlife Boat Cruises

February and March are prime viewing for visiting eagles and other birds wintering along the lower Connecticut River Valley. Bring your camera and binoculars and climb aboard Project Oceanology’s Enviro Lab III for a cruise and discover the beauty of the River in winter. The EagleWatch season also includes the Eagles of Essex exhibit at the museum and programs and activities.Event takes place at various times at the Connecticut River Museum, 67 Main St., Essex. Winter Concert

The Yale Concert Band will perform Kurt Weill’s Little Threepenny Music for Wind Ensemble” and Lansing McLoskey’s What We Do Is Secret” in a concert at Woolsey Hall, 500 College St., at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Thomas C. Duffy is the music director.

Winter Animal Tracking Classes

Learn to recognize animal footprints and other signs of their passage through the woods during two upcoming Animal Tracking Classes sponsored by the Branford Land Trust’s Nature Explorer Program from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. 

The classes will be led by Tom Cleveland (top photo) and Chris Woerner at the Lake Saltonstall preserve. This group likes snow. So meet at the Regional Water Authority parking lot on the north side of Hosely Avenue, 0.3 miles from Brushy Plain Road. Bad Weather date is Feb. 22. Free and open to the public. ShoreGrass Bluegrass Band 

This Connecticut shoreline band will join the 10 a.m. worship service at the First Congregational Church on the Green. Come here musicians on banjo & guitar and maybe mandolin fiddle and bass. Address is 1009 Main St.

Jazz Events

The Neighborhood Music School hosts a faculty concert featuring the music of Bassist Jeff Fuller, who teaches at the school. Hear cool jazz from Fuller’s new CD, The Call From Within.” NMS is located at 100 Audubon St., New Haven. Concert runs from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Home Restaurant features Fuller and Isabella Mendes (piano and vocals) from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.,1114 Main St. in Branford. Jazz, bossa nova standards and Isabella’s cool originals are on tap.
