The temperatures are dropping, so the frost may well be on the pumpkin this weekend. And judging by the events here, everyone is getting into the Halloween spirit.

Saturday, Oct. 17

Scarecrows on the Branford Green

The fifth annual Scarecrows on the green, sponsored by the Branford Garden Club, will kick off today and run through Sunday, Nov. 1. Individuals and businesses are invited to create their own. Donations are requested with all proceeds to benefit the Garden Club’s beautification of Branford. For more information and reservations, email [email protected]

Sciencetellers: Halloween Program for Families
Learn all about dry ice and the shifting states of matter through the tale of Dragons & Dreams” at the Blackstone Library from 10 to 11 a.m. Wouldn’t dragon’s breath be an amazing sight to see? Well, get ready to see it … feel it … maybe even taste it! This story features interactive and explosive experiments with dry ice, fog, smoke-filled bubbles, flying rockets and more. Enjoy this spectacular adventure and be swept away to a world where dragons are real and dreams come true — and where only the most daring of people will survive to tell the tale!

Registration for this program is not required – please bring the entire family!

Branford Compassion Club Food Drive and Spay/Neuter Fundraiser for Feral Cats

Branford Compassion Club will hold a fall food drive & fundraiser to coincide with National Feral Cat Day to promote compassion for feral cats coast to coast. Many feline rescue groups across the country will be holding special events and fundraisers in observance of the day.
Branford Compassion Club is in dire need of cat food for the fall and winter seasons, and monetary donations to fund spay/neuter programs to reduce the feral population.Event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.,

Your much-appreciated monetary donations and/or donations of unopened canned (pate) and dry cat food (dye free) can be dropped off at the Branford Compassion Club Feline Rescue and Adoption Center located at 2037 Foxon Road in North Branford.

Sunday, Oct. 18

Fall Flora Walk

Come walk the beautiful Vedder Property with Lauren Brown, a longtime Branford Land Trust member and botanist who really knows local plants and flowers. As a bonus, the view of the Thimbles from the summit is spectacular! The walk will be held on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. Meet on Pleasant Point Road, just south of the Amtrak line. Please watch land trust website or Facebook page for schedule changes.

The Fall Flora Walk is presented by the Branford Land Trust’s Nature Explorer Program, which coordinates a number of events for adults and families throughout the year. All events are free and open to the public. For all BLT walks, please wear appropriate dress and comfortable, supportive walking shoes. Bring water. Walking sticks welcome. League of Women Voters’ and BEEC BOE Candidates Forum

Students from Branford High School will submit questions for a Board of Education candidates’ forum as part of a League of Women Voters initiative to connect young people with their local government.” The Branford Early Childhood Collaborative will also sponsor this discussion. The forum takes place this Monday at 7 p.m. at fire headquarters. It’s part of the League’s Local Government Initiative,” the focus of its activities over the next two years. Demonology & the Occult in the Civil War

The Blackstone Library will host historian and lecturer Matthew Bartlett on Oct. 19, from 7 to 8 p.m. Matthew is a 2013 graduate of American Military University with a Master’s in Military History with a specialization in the American Civil War. His specialty is the Battle of Gettysburg, about which he has written six books. He and his wife belong to the 14th CT CVI, Company F.

Trick or Trunk Spook-Tacular

Sponsored by the Food Allergy Education Network, the event will take place at Foote Park, Melrose Avenue, 2:30 to 4 p.m. It is open to community and schools. Prizes for costumes and best-decorated trunks. Candy and food will not be permitted in support of children with food allergies. Participate by calling 203 – 623-3597 and registering by Oct. 18. This event made possible with support from a Community Outreach Grant from Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE).

Saturday, Oct. 24

MakerLab: Design & Create 3D Printed Files 

Learn how to design and create your own 3D files for printing. Join instructor Jim Davis for an introduction to 3D file creation. Jim will walk you through the free 3D modeling software 123Design, from the makers of AutoCAD. Once you learn this software, you’ll be able to design and 3D print your very own creations. Space is limited – register at the library’s website. The event runs from 10 a.m. to noon at the Blackstone library.

Thursday, Oct. 29

MIF Dedication

Ceremonies will be held at 3:30 p.m. to dedicate a monument at the site of the former Malleable Iron fittings Company (MIF). The public is invited to attend the ceremonies, which will be held at the flag pole at the entrance to the Stony Creek Brewery at 5 Indian Neck Ave. The brewery was recently built on a portion of the former 23-acre MIF property.
