Cool Events This Weekend & Beyond

This is the weekend for art in various forms. There’s a weekend art show at a special location in Pine Orchard and a re-enactment in Madison of a Civil War battle, live and in uniform. And some weekends from now, get ready to tee it up at a most unusual place, a place that will create a 19th hole for the occasion. Read on!

This Weekend: Friday, Aug. 28; Saturday, Aug. 29; and Sunday, Aug. 30.

Pine Orchard Chapel Art Exhibit

The Branford Arts & Cultural Alliance (BACA) presents its first neighborhood art exhibit, featuring 13 local artists. Their work will be on display at the local Pine Orchard Chapel, 25 Chapel Drive. A reception will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The chapel will also be open for the art exhibit on Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission: Free.

Thirteen artists will exhibit their work: Susan Bender, Terry Bogan, Sunni and Richard Cretella, Maggie Dean, Silvia Drewery, Sharon Hart, Lois Lehr, Laura Kaiser, Pat Kaplan, Jane Novick, Jean Polka, and Martha Link Walsh. They will be present at the Friday reception. In the near future, exhibits will be held in other Branford neighborhoods. 

Elm Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night”

Bring a blanket or chairs and take a picnic to Edgerton Park in New Haven this weekend for a lovely performance of Shakespeare’s romantic comedy Twelfth Night.” The play starts at 8 p.m and will performed each night until Sept. 6. The park is located at 75 Cliff St. Admission: Free. (Donations appreciated.) Click here for more information.

Italian Festival in Guilford

The St. George Men’s Group hosts its second annual Italian Festival this weekend. The event takes place behind St. George’s Church in Guilford. There’s fun for the whole family, including live music, (Take2 & call Me in the Morning,) homemade Italian food and pastries, a grape stomping contest and a bocce tournament. There’s also a Kids’ Zone. Admission is free for those under 15 and $3 for everyone else. Hours are 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Saturday. The aim of the event is to raise money for local fuel assistance for neighbors in need.

Final Civil War Commemoration 

A Civil War battle will be re-enacted this weekend, complete with rifle fire and cannons at the final Civil War encampment at Bauer Park in Madison. The event marks the 150th anniversary commemoration of the Civil War. The event gets underway at Bauer Park at 257 Copse Road on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free. Parking is $5. Click here for more information.

Opening Pandora’s Box 

Okay kids, the Blackstone Memorial Library has one final program to celebrate the end of summer and the beginning of fall. Ingrid Schaeffer will lead the group in an interactive theatrical program that will have K – 4th graders up and moving! See if you can find an adult to take you to the library so you can participate in this upbeat event. Program starts at 10:30 a.m. and runs to noon. Registration for this program is required. Annual Summer Art Show at the WW Library
The Willoughby Wallace Library in Stony Creek hosts its annual art show through Sept. 2. Visit the Keyes Gallery to view local professional and non-professional artists of all ages. The exhibit’s theme is Stony Creek and the Thimble Islands.” The library is located at 146 Thimble Islands Road and is open Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

After Labor Day

Marble Breaks

Stefan Simon, the director of the Yale Institute for Preservation of Cultural Heritage, will discuss world monuments and sculpture, their deterioration and what can be done to preserve them. His talk, entitled Marble Breaks and Iron Bends,” takes place at the James Blackstone Memorial Library on Tuesday Sept. 8, at 7 p.m., sponsored by the Blackstone and the Stony Creek Museum.

October Golf at the Blackstone 

Birdie in the Biographies. And putt in the periodicals and if you’re lucky Eagle in the Easy Readers. Get ready for this 19th Hole Party (that means food and drinks) on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $40, in advance. This adults-only event features unlimited mini golf, food, drinks, craft beer tasting, prize drawings, and a chance to win the Masters Book Jacket.
