Cool Events This Weekend & Beyond

Take in an art exhibit, or an organ recital on the town Green or plan for a series of events, including two bike races in town, one to help BCTV, our community television station and the other to help build a school devastated by an earthquake in Nepal. And don’t forget this weekend’s Guilford Fair.

This Weekend Head to Guilford

The Guilford Agricultural Fair

The fair is back in full swing this weekend with music and numerous events for families and animals. The fair, which began in 1859, is still going strong. Doors open Friday from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The event takes place at the town’s Fair grounds on Lovers Lane. Tickets range from $10 for adults. Senior discount is $8. Children from 6 to 11 are free. There is a three-day discounted pass for $25 at the gate.

Friday, Sept. 18

Organ Recital with Silent Movies

Organist Shari Lucas will play music to accompany three old-fashioned silent movies, just as they were done in the 1920s. The movies include The Blacksmith, a comedy starring Buster Keaton and Get Out and Under, a comedy starring Harold Lloyd circa, 1920. Free concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Trinity Episcopal Church, on the Branford Green.

Saturday, Sept. 19

Shoreline Harvest Art Festival 

With Permission

Head for the Branford Green to view an outdoor art gallery filled with the work of local artists. Look for the tent! Event gets underway at 10 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m. Free and open to the public.

Trees and People” Art Exhibit

Breakfast, Beef and Beer Fest

This goes all day…. So pick a time and enjoy. American Legion Post 83, 243 North Main St., Branford. Event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Donation: $20, free for children under 10.

Retired police officer and volunteer firefighter Dorrance Johnson presents a fascinating lecture on the history of fires in the town of Branford on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 7 to 8 p.m. at the Blackstone Library. Sponsored by the Branford Historical Society.

Meet Your State Senator, Ted Kennedy, Jr.

Join State Sen. Ted Kennedy, Jr. when he holds office hours in three of the towns in the 12th District. You can ask questions and share concerns about issues in state government.

Run4Nepal

Branford’s Nepalese community is organizing a 5K run to raise funds to re-build a school destroyed when Nepal was high with a series of major earthquakes. The Society of Nepalese in America has been raising funds to rebuild their country. This race hopes to rebuild a specific school. Go to www.run4nepalusa.com for additional information. Birdie in the Biographies

And putt in the periodicals and if you’re lucky Eagle in the Easy Readers. Get ready for this 19th Hole Party (that means food and drinks) on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $40, in advance. This adults-only event features unlimited mini golf, food, drinks, craft beer tasting, prize drawings, and a chance to win the Masters Book Jacket.
