Stony Creek Quarry

A couple of tough choices for nature lovers this weekend – explore the Stony Creek Quarry or Killam’s Point. The weather is supposed to be perfect so flip a coin and head outdoors. Later on, rub elbows with Branford authors, catch some fine music, and drop by Walsh Intermediate School to support American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

A ribbon cutting for the newest addition to Branford’s restaurant scene took place Thursday. Located at 420 E. Main St., Café Fiore opened at the beginning of the month under the ownership of Rusit Cecunjanin, who has 17 years experience in the restaurant business and 32 years as a cook. General manager is Valon Avdimetaj. 

The elegant interior has a contemporary feel with polished surfaces and white leather seating. Café Fiore’s menu is quintessential Italian, highlighted by chef’s specialties. Café Fiore is open seven days a week. Call 203 – 208-4690 for reservations.

Murder at Blackstone Abbey Fundraising Event

An interactive murder mystery night, Murder at Blackstone Abbey lets participants solve the clues, interview suspects and help catch a killer. This second annual murder mystery fundraising event is set in the Victorian era and takes place at the Blackstone Library, 758 Main St., at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $50 per person, and include beer, wine, and appetizers. All proceeds benefit the James Blackstone Memorial Library. To purchase tickets, visit www.blackstonelibrary.org.

Stony Creek Quarry Tour

Unk DaRos at Quarry

Join the Stony Creek Museum and The Guilford Keeping Society at 10 a.m. to tour Stony Creek’s famous granite quarries with quarry historians and former first selectmen Carl Balestracci of Guilford and Unk DaRos of Branford.
Learn about the quarry past from these descendants of quarrymen, and the dangers and hardships involved in removing and fabricating the stone and transporting it to sites around the country. Find out about current quarrying techniques from Stony Creek Granite staff members as they continue to fill the demands of architects and builders for the handsome, pink stone and plan for the future of the quarry. 
On arriving at the quarry, visitors will be asked to sign a liability waiver. Organizers suggest that those who might have trouble standing for an hour might like to bring a folding chair.
Tickets are $15 and available at Page Hardware, Greene Art Gallery, and Breakwater Books in Guilford; Taken For Granite in Stony Creek; or at the quarry on the day of the tour. Please no children under 10. Ample parking is available inside the Quarry gates.

Natural History Of Killam’s Point 

The Branford Land Trust and the First Congregational Church of Branford are co-sponsoring a series of programs on Killam’s Point this year, launching this weekend.

An exploration of Killam’s Point will be led by Martha Rice, beginning at 10 a.m. Walk the beautiful trails through upland forest, by productive marshes and enjoy breath-taking views of the Sound.

Killam’s Point, an ecological treasure owned by the First Congregational Church, has healthy forests, secluded beaches, wide salt marshes, granite bluffs and a fascinating array of flora and fauna. Those taking advantage of the collaborative effort of the two organizations will have the opportunity to enjoy one of the largest, privately owned undeveloped tracts on Long Island Sound.

Additional outdoor events at the Point include Our Useful Neighbors, the Horseshoe Crab” (June 25), Killam’s Point Shore Birds” (Aug. 27), and Killam’s Point Fall Foliage” (Oct. 22).

Bob Kolb Jazz Trio

The Bob Kolb Jazz Trio will perform the songs of Anthony Newley (What Kind of Fool Am I, Candy Man, Gonna Build a Mountain …) from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Evergreen Woods (life care retirement community), 88 Notch Hill Road.
Tenor sax performer Kolb performs cool, swingin’ jazz, along with music from the masters, movies and musicals

Around the World in 20 Songs

The Legacy Theater will host a delightful and entertaining production that features a collage of Broadway show tunes, jazz music, old favorites, show stoppers, dance, hilarious stories, and audience participation. The event, which includes dinner, will take place at the Woodwinds, 29 School Ground Road, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Tickets are $45 each ($35 for 12 and under). Eventbrite charges an extra fee if ordered online. To avoid the fee, you may write a check to Legacy Theatre” and mail to Legacy Theatre, 128 Thimble Islands Road, Branford, CT 06405. Please include the name of each person attending and that the payment is for Around the World in 20 Songs.” Tickets will not be mailed out, but reservations will be held at the door; there are no refunds or exchanges.

Stony Creek Art Show 

Branford Arts and Cultural Alliance presents an exhibition featuring Stony Creek Artists. The opening reception will take place Friday, May 20, from 5 to 8 p.m. and continue Saturday, May 21, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, May 22, noon to 4 p.m.
The event will take place at Seaside Hall (home of the Stony Creek Fife & Drum Corp), 215 Thimble Island Road.

Local Author Expo

The Blackstone Library is hosting its first Local Author Expo on Saturday, May 21, from 1 to 5 p.m., to highlight the works of more than 30 local authors. There will be author talks, books sales and signings, and a food truck on site.

The event will begin with a presentation by Ann Nyberg, author of “Slices of Life,” and the longest-serving, full-time female news anchor/reporter in Connecticut television history.

An adult and children’s author panel discussion will follow, highlighting the great talent of writers in our area. Our panelists will discuss various aspects of the writing process and share their own personal experiences. The panel will conclude in a Q&A where you can have your questions answered by experienced authors.
 
Throughout the afternoon, you’ll have the opportunity to meet and support our local authors. With a wide variety of adult, children’s, and young adult authors present, this family friendly event will feature something for everyone. Tables will be set up around the library for local authors to interact with the public, while selling and signing their books (please bring cash, not all authors accept credit cards). Paint the Town Purple/Relay for Life

The town was painted” purple in anticipation of the Relay for Life event running from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. at the Walsh Intermediate School. Luminaria bags line the track as cancer survivors and their supporters walk throughout the day and night. The annual event raises funds for the American Cancer Society.

This is the fifth year for the Relay at Walsh. Activities begin May 14 with an information station on the Branford Green. Events during the Relay include the traditional celebratory survivors’ lap, food and ice cream trucks, live entertainment, Zumba, and Knocker Ball.
 
Along with Branford, participating towns include Guilford, Madison, North Branford, and East Haven.

Tip-A-Cop at Lenny’s

The 25th annual Tip-A-Cop event, hosted by the Branford Police Department, will take place at Lenny’s, 205 S. Montowese St. from noon to 10 p.m.

Have your meal served by police officers from the Branford Police Department! All tips received by the officers will be donated to benefit Special Olympics Connecticut.
