A family dinner erupted into violence last night after a 32-year-old man grabbed his wife by the throat and attempted to strangle her in front of their kids, Branford police said.

Police arrested Christopher, Zdunek after they received an emergency 911 call from his wife. The cause of the dispute was not immediately known but Lt. Geoffrey Morgan said Zdunek had been drinking

“Alcohol was a factor,” Morgan said.

Just as officers arrived at the Zdunek home at 7 Hopkins Court, off Cherry Hill Road, Zdunek fled into a nearby wooded area, police said.

Detective Ryan Tobin spotted Zdunek as he emerged from the woods. After Tobin identified himself, Zdunek again took off, fleeing through rear yards in the neighborhood, police said.  Eventually Detective Tobin took him into custody but not before he suffered minor injuries to his knee and a cut to his hand.

Branford Police Department Zdunek was charged with several felonies, including assault in the second degree, strangulation in the second degree, assaulting an officer and interfering with an officer. He was also charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor, interfering with an officer, threatening and disorderly conduct.

He was held on a $250,000 bond and was arraigned today in state court in New Haven.
