The large crowd attending the most recent jazz concert Thursday evening on the Branford green was treated to an outstanding show by the dynamic Lao Tizer Quartet from Los Angeles.
Led by Tizer on keyboard, members of the group included Emmy winner Chieli Minucci on guitar, Ric Fierabracci on bass, and Joel Rosenblatt on drums.
The group last appeared in Branford in 2013, but rain that night moved the concert to the high school auditorium where they dazzled the small though enthusiastic crowd of about 100. Thursday the weather was perfect and a crowd estimated at 1,000 attended the concert on the Green.
Regarding their return to Branford Tizer said, “It’s a great honor and pleasure to be returning to beautiful Branford for this great annual event. We look forward to sharing a great summer evening of fun and music with the loyal patrons of Branford Jazz.” Here he gives a thumbs up for Branford.
The group opened their first set with “What It Is,” from their album “Tizer Live.” According to a press release, their music is a “mix of jazz, rock, classical and Afro Cuban and they create a dynamic, rich with new melodic, harmonic and improvisational possibilities.”
Retired bank president Joseph Ciaburri of Branford said, “I was very impressed with the Tizer group tonight. I didn’t know what to expect but you couldn’t help but get into it with the music, energy, and the enthusiasm in their performance.”
The audience loved the evening. Especially the young ones.

The second set included a high-powered collection of originals and was opened with “World in Rhythm” from their latest album “Downbeat,” which was written by Tizer and Minucci. Their program concluded with “Uptown,” which got many in the audience up and dancing.
The group took a bow after the show.
The series will continue next Thursday when “Opius Bliss” with Michele Walker performing at 6:30 p.m. The concert is a make up for the postponed show of July 7.
And the following week on Sept. 1, “The Saxtet” concert will take place. The original concert of Aug. 12 was also rained out. That show will begin at 6 p.m.
