Motorcyclist Seriously Injured In Collision

A 52-year-old West Haven motorcyclist traveling on East Main Street was seriously injured Sunday after a car driven by the former chair of the Planning & Zoning Commission (P&Z) attempted to turn left onto Mill Plain Road and collided with the cyclist.

Ellsworth (Mac) McGuigan, 79, the longtime and now retired P&Z chair, was attempting to make a left-hand turn off East Main Street and onto Mill Plain Road when he collided with Christopher Scranton, who was driving West on his Harley Davidson motorcycle. McGuigan was uninjured.

The accident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. Fire department paramedics said Scranton suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital. He is expected to survive, Capt. Geoffrey Morgan told the Eagle yesterday. He is now considered to be in stable condition.

Members of the police and fire department paramedics quickly went to the scene of the crash. Police closed down the roads for a period of time. The south Central Connecticut Traffic Unit is investigating the accident. McGuigan, who retired from the P & Z last year, gave a statement to the police.

Police Officer Corianne Dionne is investigating the crash. Scranton lives at 75 Martin St., in West Haven. McGuigan lives at 10 Riverside Drive in Branford.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact Officer Dionne at 203 – 481-4241.

The crash remains under investigation. No arrests have been made.
