If any records were set last Wednesday at the girls track meet officials might have had to disallow them because it was so windy they couldn’t be counted.
As luck would have it there were no records but the Lady Hornets didn’t need any en route to sweeping Hillhouse 119 – 28, Sheehan 107.5 – 42.5 and West Haven 117 – 32 in the four team meet.
“It was awful,” said Coach Kevin Connell (pictured), of the weather conditions. “But if we’re going to compete in it we better get a few wins.” It’s common for track meets to be combined with multiple schools and the scores are kept as if each school is playing against only one other school so they have head – to-head competition.
Several team members did well despite the wind and rain. Cyrene Nicholas won both the 1600 at 5:41 and the 3200 in 12:31 as well as being a member of the winning 4X800 at 11:02.
“Cyrene (pictured) had a great day winning two events with respectable times”, said Connell.
Throughout the dismal, windy day runners and coaches covered up to stay warm and dry during the cold rain.
Other winners for the Lady Hornets included 100 Hurdles Claira Janover 16.4, 300 Hurdles, Izzy Bysiewicz, Long Jump, Etta Hanlon (pictured),14 – 7, High Jump, Janover 4 – 4, Pole Vault, Elisa Case 9’ and Javelin, Keira Integlia.
In addition to Nicholas, other members of the winning 4X800 included Anneliese Troidle(pictured), Courtney Cosgrove and Jessica Lohret. And members of the 4X400 winning team included Troidle, Bysiewicz, Zoe Smiarowski and Cleo Kyriakides.
With the three wins Branford improves to 5 – 1. Their next home meet is Tuesday, May 5, against Career.
