The accident, the cause of which is under investigation, took place between exits 53 and 54 on the southbound lane heading toward New Haven. Fire officials said seven people were injured as the vehicles crashed into each other.

Branford fire officials said they learned of the crashes at about 1:20 p.m. Three hours later one lane was open.

Firefighters from both Branford Fire Department and East Haven Fire Department worked to extricate the patients from their vehicles, while additional patients were treated and transported to area hospitals by ambulances from Branford Fire Department and American Medical Response.

It took our crews nearly 25 minutes to extricate one of the seriously injured pediatric patients from the vehicle she was riding in,” Stackpole said in a fire report. Overall, a total of seven patients were transported to local hospitals. Four refused medical treatment on the scene.

The accident and its aftermath is under investigation by the Connecticut State Police.
