The town has developed a Coastal Resilience Plan in response to rising sea levels and recent intense storms, which make its shoreline vulnerable.
The 53-page report, available on the town’s website, Identifies areas of vulnerability based on expected rising sea levels and offers possible solutions in the event of major storm, such as Superstorm Sandy. It includes maps of all the major neighborhoods showing how far flooding could extend and suggestions for coping, which may include elevation of building, shoreline protection, beach nourishment, or acquisition.
In conjunction with the report, an online Coastal Resilience Survey will determine what residents care about (homes, water utilities, drainage, natural systems); what they are worried about (wind, water, waves, secondary hazards, failing drainage; and what they want in the aftermath of storm (restore homes, water service, reopen roads, restore communication).
The entire shoreline has been impacted by several major storms over the past couple of years and the town has responded by examining ways to protect residents and infrastructure.
