Sophomore Zack Withington was a one-man wrecking crew in the Hornets hockey game with Lyman Hall on Thursday, scoring four of the team’s five goals in their 5 – 1 SCC victory over the Trojans.
“Zack had a great performance tonight,” said coach Adolf Brink. “He was amazing and was on top of his game.”
The win stopped a three-game losing streak for the Hornets and improved their record to 4 – 7‑1. The co-op team from Lyman Hall- HK (that’s short for Haddem-Killingworth) and Coginchaug dropped to 7 – 4‑2.
Lyman Hall scored first on a goal by Scott Bradley at 6:09 of the first period to go up 1 – 0.
Branford’s Robert Lionetti, a freshman, tied the game shortly after at 7:49 on assists from Scott Klouda and Mitchell Petrillo. He scored the first goal for Branford.
Withington followed up with the first of his four goals at 9:35 on an assist from Justin Edwards to give the Hornets a 2 – 1 lead after one period.
Withington remained hot in the second period scoring all three goals for the Hornets. Scott Klouda (pictured) had two assists and Michael Petrillo had one.
He led off with one at 1:57 on assists from Dalton Childs and Dante Ghiroli, got his next one at 11:22 also on an assist from Ghiroli and his fourth and final one at 13:03 on the third assist of the game from Ghiroli along with a second one from Klouda.
Senior James Mason clears the puck out of the Branford zone.
At one point, all six Branford skaters converge on the puck in front of the goal.
Goalie Justin Edwards snags one out of the air. He had 28 saves.
Here Michael Annunziata, a senior, brings the puck up ice.
Junior goalie Justin Edwards stopped 28 of 29 shots by the Trojans. “He did a nice job for us in net,” said coach Brink.
“When you have one player scoring four goals in the game and another stopping 28 of 29 shots you’re going to be tough to beat,” the coach said.
“That’s what we got today.”
