Cops: Woman Confesses To Man’s Murder At Branford Motel

Police have issued an arrest warrant for a Middletown woman and charged her with strangling a 41-year-old man in what police are investigating as a possible rough sex” scenario.

The homicide took place at the Branford Motel last week; the victim’s body was found in his room the following afternoon, Thursday, after he failed to check out of the motel. The victim has been identified as Byron C. McDade, whose last known address was in Deep River.

Detective Lieutenant Arthur Kohloff, who is supervising the investigation, said detectives from the state and local major state crime units found what they termed vital evidence” in the motel room during the crime scene search which led investigators to Chucky’s Mobil restaurant where McDade and his date were captured together on video, hours before his death.

Detectives said McDade’s last known address was 85 Hemlock Dr., Deep River. They issued an arrest warrant for the woman, identified as Leshanda Gregory, 27, of Middletown (pictured), after the Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy on Friday.

During the autopsy we learned that Mr. McDade’s death was caused by a traumatic injury to his neck, and we began to handle the investigation as a homicide,” said Detective Kohloff, who is supervising the investigation.

Because of that video evidence and relentless work by our detectives, we were able to track down” McDade’s companion, Kohloff said. He said police were able to locate her and Branford detectives obtained a confession directly linking her to Mr. McDade’s death.” He thanked the Old Saybrook and Middletown police departments for helping to find the young woman.

An arrest warrant was issued today for murder and two counts of larceny. Gregory is currently being held on a $250,000 bond because of probation violations in a separate case. She pleaded guilty to a larceny charge in 2012, then was arrested for failure to appear in court.

The arrest warrant is expected to be signed by a judge soon. According to someone familiar with the case, the incident involves an episode of rough sex.”

Chief Halloran noted, I am hopeful that the diligence of our investigative team, surrounded by the professional assistance we received from a number of other state and local agencies will bring some level of conclusion to the family of Mr. McDade during this time of significant loss of a family member.”
