Sally E. Bahner PhotoThe Board of Education is terminating its contract with Chartwell Food Service at the end of the school year and the 22 “lunch ladies” employed by Chartwell may be out of jobs. They will have to reapply for new jobs at various public schools under a different contractor.

They made their concerns known at last week’s meeting of the Board of Education’s Personnel and Finance Committee meeting, standing with signs as Renee DeAngeles, a 26-year Chartwell employee and Branford resident, addressed the committee.

Cool Events This Week, Here & Beyond

by Sally E. Bahner | Mar 16, 2018 8:25 am

Bill OBrien PhotoWe finally spotted some robins. Given the triple header of Nor’easters, they were either in in hibernation mode or delayed their return though some have been known to linger through the winter. Cardinals, however, do linger through the winter contrasting brightly with the snow. (See top photo.) We’re starting to hear early morning bird songs, too. Be sure to explore some of the cool events listed below that will put you in touch with your own habitat. Got a cool event? Email sebahner@snet.net by Wednesday noon.

Winter markets are big right now. There may not be corn, tomatoes, zucchini, but there are plenty other goodies. Plan a visit to the Dudley Farm Market and the City Seed Market. And, along with a selection of everything from basic to unique, the Elm City offers a Jazz Brunch on Sundays. Oh, and be sure to stay safe during today’s “bomb cyclone.” Got a cool event? by Bill O'Brien | Dec 15, 2017 8:31 am

Bill O'Brien PhotoSmiling faces filled the Hospitality Room at Cedar Woods senior living and retirement community on Cedar Street recently as the residents and staff joined together for the presentation of a $1,700 check to the “Feed Branford Kids” program, the results of their Dec. 2 Holiday Fair.

by Sally E. Bahner | Sep 22, 2017 8:00 am

Fall has officially arrived, but the warmth of summer is lingering. Tag sales, book sales, bike tourneys, and artwork for all tastes can all be found within the borders of our town. If the activist in you has been raised, check out Connecticut Shoreline Indivisible’s fall kick-off meeting with Rosa DeLauro (and be sure that you are registered to vote regardless of your political leanings). Looking ahead, round up your pups and kitties for Branford Compassion Club’s Animal Awareness Day with the Blessing of the Animals as its highlight. Need more ideas for activities? Read on!

A big weekend along the shoreline! The Guilford Fair, a perennial favorite, kicks off the agricultural fair season. Every area of the state has its signature events, featuring midways, entertainment, baking contests, horse and oxen pulls, rides, and, of course, food. Kids with guitars (and drums and more) can strut their stuff on the green tonight and aim for stardom, while plant lovers and families stake their claim on Saturday and Sunday. Paddle your canoe (or kayak) along the Branford River and get a glimpse of Broadway as well. Read on! There’s more.

Dinner With a Message

by Sally E. Bahner | Apr 6, 2017 8:00 am

Sally E. Bahner PhotoThey came for the food and stayed for the message.

The small dining hall at the Shore Beach Union Church was full of those eager to try food from Somalia, Libya, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen at the International Dinner last week.

More importantly, the dinner was a benefit for IRIS (Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services), a New Haven-based refugee agency that serves Connecticut. The organization has been grappling with the fallout from the Trump administration’s executive orders banning travel from various Muslim countries.
