nothin Andre Ness, 60 | New Haven Independent

Andre Ness, 60

Fred Davis sent in this remembrance:

Andre Gabriel Lurch” Ness died Monday May 16 at Hospice in Branford. He was 60.

Born in Belgium, son of the late Harry and Jacqueline Ness, he is survived by his daughter, Jacqueline Ness of New Haven, and siblings Blanche Crockett and Paul Ness of Maine, Jacqueline Canestri of New Haven, Francine Lucibello of Orange, Harry Ness of Florida, Jack Ness of Derby, and the late Claude Ness. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Andre was known to generations of New Haveners for living in a converted school bus camper and has been a fixture in the area since the early 1960s. He was a stout and hearty soul who seemed to know everyone, a big, tough man with an even bigger heart, known to offer spoken word” poetry and always ready to lend a hand or share a laugh.

Andre had an amazing skill for fighting that surprised many folks unlucky enough to cross him. He was a skilled lumberjack who logged Water Company property for years, maintaining the forests and selling firewood. Andre was highly skilled as a self-taught mechanic and learned to read and write despite undiagnosed dyslexia, eventually authoring two books.

He loved his friends, his motorcycle and his daughter Jaqueline with all his heart, and will be greatly missed by many.

Many longtime New Haveners know Andre or have an Andre story” — ask around!

A graveside service is at 1:30 p.m. today in Beaverdale Memorial Park, 90 Pine Rock Ave.
