Edward H. Taylor, 85

Edward H. Taylor, 85, passed away Sept. 28, 2016 in Hinesville, Ga. after a long illness.

Edward was born Sept.1, 1931 to the late Edward H. Taylor, Sr. and Jennie V. White in New Haven. He was married to the late Winifred L. Skinner on Sept. 8, 1951. With this union, they reared four children. Edward was a judo/martial arts instructor. He taught many classes in self Defense to the young and old traveled all over the world with his colleagues bringing back many 1st place trophies. He was a member of Bethel AME Church on Goffe Street in New Haven.

On June 12, 1975, Edward graduated from Harvard University with a masters of Education degree. He was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Chi Omicrom Chapter of New Haven. Edward was one of the Chain Gang 21 who who were inducted on May 15, 1976.

Edward worked in the community of Greater New Haven, holding the directorship of the Boys and Girls group homes, which also led him to teaching in the school system. He was a program organizer and a very strong influential writer and author of many books. Edward was a scholar and touched many lives throughout his career in New Haven and surrounding areas. He loved to educate people and he was a lifelong teacher.

Edward leaves to cherish his memories, three daughters, Theodora L. Fleming (Jessie), Yvonne F. Jones both of Hinesville, GA, Edwina A. Williams (Mark) of Neptune, New Jersey; two brothers, Wayman R. Taylor of New Ark, Delaware, Russell A. Taylor of Georgia; one sister, Janie E. Blumthal of Croton on Hudson, New York; 9 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Mr. Taylor was predeceased by his son, Edward H. Taylor, Jr. (April 2011).


A celebration of his life will take place Friday, Oct. 7, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Bethel AME Church, 255 Goffe St., New Haven, CT 06511, with visitation Friday at the church from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Rev Steven A. Cousin Jr. will be officiating. Interment will be held at Beaverdale Memorial Park in New Haven Services by Howard K.
