Edward Joseph Bonyai, known to many as Dr. Edison,” died on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2017, at the Smilow Cancer Center in New Haven. He owned and operated a small business, Dr. Edison’s Computer Medicine, through which he made numerous friends in the computing, arts, and business communities.

Born on Dec. 27, 1954 in Montreal, Canada, Ed grew up in Wallingford. He is predeceased by his parents, Barbara Bradshaw Bonyai and George Bonyai, of the Yalesville section of Wallingford. He is survived by a son, Mars.

As an adult, Ed lived in the New Orleans area for many years, before returning to New Haven about 20 years ago. He studied engineering in New
Orleans and worked as a toolmaker. He also attended a school for gaming in Las Vegas.

Ed loved cats, especially Persians. He was heartbroken when Kodiak, his beloved black Persian, died two years ago. Ed also was a tropical fish
enthusiast and created elaborate reef environments in a 70-gallon saltwater tank. He was an excellent cook and roasted his own coffee. He loved science and was an avid reader.

Ed was a huge rock fan, especially Pink Floyd, electric-guitar virtuosos like Steve Vai, and noise music. For a time, he worked as a sound engineer
for the band Butthole Surfers.

As a photographer, Ed produced a number of stunning images of New Haven. He was a computer gamer with formidable skills in Diablo 3, World of Warcraft, and The Witcher, whose hero, Geralt of Rivea, he resembled somewhat. Dr. Edison’s high-powered custom workstations for artists, gamers, and filmmakers were in high-demand.

Ed’s affable style of doing business endeared him to many clients. He was adept at solving problems, but won over his customers with his enthusiasm for technology and his love of life. In the final months, his clients circled around him in friendship — sharing in the tasks of daily life as
his energy waned and staying by his side as he passed out of this world.

A memorial service is being planned. To receive a notice, please leave a note on his memorial page at the the Yalesville Funeral Home.
