Rita R. Krevit, 95, a Holocaust survivor and former New Haven alderwoman, passed away peacefully on Jan. 4, 2016.

Born on November 26, 1920 in Leipzig, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Hans and Charlotte (Mislowitzer) Hartwich.

Rita is survived by her daughter Hilary Converse and son-in-law Mark Converse, granddaughter Jessica Hughes and husband Peter Hughes, grandson Joshua Converse, great granddaughter Charli Hughes, great grandson Steven Hughes, dear friend and caregiver Margaret Haase, cousin Dr. Ruth Sternlicht, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law, Edgar and Beatrice Hartley.

Rita was a business owner, an accomplished athlete, longtime volunteer and president of the Tower One Tower East Resident’s Association, and proudly served several terms representing New Haven’s 6th Ward on the (then-named) Board of Aldermen, where she chaired the Committee on Homelessness.

Above all, Rita loved family and friends, and had a strong sense of social justice. She was a Holocaust survivor and drove an ambulance in Manchester, England during WWII.

Graveside service on Monday, January 11, 2016, at Beaverdale Memorial Park, 90 Pine Rock Ave., New Haven, at 11:30 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Columbus House, Inc., 586 Ella T Grasso Blvd., New Haven, CT 06519.
