Genevieve Stallings Butler, 88

Genevieve Stallings Butler, a life-long resident of New Haven passed away on, January 31, 2015 at the age of 88.

She was born in New Haven, Connecticut, March 10, 1926, the seventh child of the late Enoch M. and Alice Williams Stallings. Genevieve was a graduate of New Haven Commercial High School and Connecticut School of Cosmetology. After successful completion of her course of study and examinations she was licensed by the State of Connecticut as a Beautician.

She was christened as an infant and at the age of 12 joined the Church of God and Saints of Christ. In 1951 she married the late William J. Butler of Tampa, Florida; to this union two loving daughters were born. For more than 45 years she worked at Gladys’ Beauty Salon in the city. Until her demise she was a devoted church member, supporter of her pastors, and tireless worker in her church as choir member, usher, and Charitable Chairman. Genevieve will be remembered by numerous generous Connecticut merchants as the chair of the annual free Thanksgiving Day Dinner sponsored by the Church of God and Saints of Christ. In 2014, as Chairman Emeritus she was overjoyed that the goal of 500 free Thanksgiving dinners to the public was reached.

She is survived by her loving daughters Denise Butler (Juergen Fenger) of Germany and Tanya Butler of Hamden. One grandson, Justin Butler of Hamden; and five great-grandchildren Janae, Justin, Jacob, Justina, and Janaiyah Butler. She also leaves two brothers, Robert Stallings, Sr. (Myrtle) of New Haven, Joseph Stallings of Leesburg, FL and a sister Phyllis Grice (Vernon) of Seaford, DE. She was predeceased by eight siblings: Esther Troxler, Alice R. Cox, Rebecca Powell, Ruth Brown, Irma Flemister, Enoch Stallings, Jr., Mary Cox, and Virginia Barber. A host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends have been blessed to know her. She will be sadly missed by family and friends alike and treasured in our hearts forever.

Services for Genevieve are as follows: Viewing is Friday, February 6, 2015, 9:00 – 10:00 AM.
