Joseph DeMatteo of New Haven died peacefully March 26, 2015, at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale with his family by his side. He is the husband of Rose Marcosano DeMatteo.

Father of Lisa (Chico) Furino and Joseph (Liz) DeMatteo, Jr. Brother of Judy (Arnold) Cusano. Grandfather of Diamond and Deanna DeMatteo, Aniello (Nello) Furino, Michael DeMatteo, Isabella Furino and Rocco DeMatteo. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Joe was born in New Haven Jan. 8, 1936, to the late Stephen DeMatteo and Concetta Macaluso DeMatteo Meizis. He served his country with honor in the Navy during the Korean War and after being honorably discharged began a career as the owner of Leading Lady Beauty Salon. Joe was very active in New Haven politics. He was Republican Town Chairman in the 70’s and later served under three mayors as the Director of Real Estate Services for the City of New Haven. He was a member of Scungilli International. Joe’s family would like to thank the doctors and staff of the 9th Floor ICU12 at Smilow for the wonderful care they gave him.

His funeral will leave the IOVANNE FUNERAL HOME, INC. 11 Wooster Pl. Monday morning at 9:30 for a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Bernadette Church at 10. Burial will follow in All Saints Cemetery.
