Katie Mae Walters, 92

Katie Mae Walters, 92, of New Haven, passed away peacefully in her sleep Jan. 19, 2017 at the Regal Care of West Haven.

She was born June 28, 1924 in Aiken, S. C. to the late Preston Brooklyn Dicks and Rosalee Oakman.

Katie retired from Setlow Manufacturing and also organized many successful social events with the utmost attention to detail. She was an outspoken sincere woman who loved her family. Many considered her a second mom” especially since she helped her sister, Bea raise her three boys. She was a traditional independent woman who had something to say whether you wanted to hear it or not. She had a kind heart and loving spirit. Kate often attended Varick Memorial AME Zion Church. She loved bowling, collecting, television and peanut butter. One of her favorite things was listening to Johnny Mathis and Nat King Cole.

She leaves to treasure her memory, nieces and nephews, James A. (Diana) Murray of Zebulon, N.C., Ellis (Sissy) Murray of Washington, Ga., Arthur Murray of New Haven, Gwendolyn Bell (Anthony) of Ladson, S.C. and Charles Dawkins (Syline) of Hamden and a host of grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband, John H. Walters; son, Jonathan W. (Doris E.) Walters; sisters, Claire M. Morgan and Beatrice Murray; special niece, Fannie Hobson; and nephew, Preston B. Murray.

A celebration of life will take place Jan. 30, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Howard K. Hill Funeral Services, 1287 Chapel St, New Haven, CT 06511. Friends may call Monday at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Interment will be at Hamden Plains Cemetery, Hamden.
