Overseer Mattie C. Darden, 91, of New Haven, was called home from labor to reward on April 25, 2017. She was the widow of William Henry Darden.

She was born on March 24, 1926, in Philadelphia, PA, a daughter of the late Bishop Austin Atkinson and Lethia Johnson Atkinson. Prior to retiring, she was employed at the former U.S. Repeating Arms. She was the Founder and Overseer of Agape Christian Center in New Haven.

Overseer Darden leaves to cherish loving and lasting memories, her daughter, Pastor Willa Moody; a brother, Charles N. Atkinson; sisters, Mary E. Joyner, Nora McCleese and Virginia Griffin; grandchildren, Barry Atkinson, Sheree Atkinson-Edwards, Rodney J. Russell, and Aaron J. and Darius D. Moody; nine great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; her church family; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by a son, Anderson B. Atkinson; sisters, Stella May Atkinson and Minnie A. Lewis; and brothers, Austin Atkinson, Jr. and Clarence R. Atkinson.

Overseer Darden will Lie-In-State on Thursday, May 4, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Agape Christian Center, 90 – 100 Goffe St., New Haven. Viewing will be held at the church Friday, May 5, 2017 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. with a celebration of her life and legacy beginning at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be Saturday at 10:00 AM in Beaverdale Memorial Park. Professional services entrusted to Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven.
