Vincent DiLauro, 75

Vin DiLauro kept cars running int he Hill, kept his family going, and kept his community on track, as well.

he died Monday at the age of 75 after a short illness.

DiLauro was born on March 15, 1942. As an adult he ran a family business on Columbus Avenue called Columbus Auto Body Works. His grandfather, an Italian immigrant named Vincenzo DiLauro, started the business in 1928. Vin kept it running with good cheer for decades, a larger-than-life presence in the shop, and in the community.

He kept one brother, Anthony, employed fixing cars and a sister-in-law, Jennifer, in the front office, and helped another, Raffael, start an iconic downtown gallery called Group W Bench.

DiLauro was the consummate civic volunteer, serving on groups ranging from the neighborhood management team to the Harbour Landing Condo Association, where he served as president.

DiLauro was a people person, an enthusiast — even when he was conducting an auction for a Toyota with more than 100,000 miles on it. Click on the video to watch DiLauro do that.

DiLauro’s funeral viewing is scheduled for Thursday at West Haven Funeral Home, 662 Savin Ave. West Haven, from 4 to 8 p.m. The funeral service is to take place Friday, Feb. 2, at Our Lady of Victory Church, 600 Jones Hill Rd, West Haven, starting at 11 a.m.
