William Butler

William James Butler, a resident of West Haven, passed away suddenly on Friday, March 18 at Yale-New Haven Hospital at the age of 84.

He was born in Tampa, Fla., on April 16, 1926. He was the son of the late James M. and Carrie Bell Butler and resided in New Haven for more than 55 years, before moving to West Haven in 2010.

Bill (often called Butler”) was a graduate of Tampa High School and served his country proudly during World War II and terminated his service with an honorable discharge at the rank of Technician Fifth Grade in 1946. After his military discharge, he moved to New Haven, where he married his now former wife Genevieve Butler in 1951; to this union two loving daughters were born.

He joined the Church of God and Saints of Christ in 1950 and was ordained a deacon by the late Counselor Enoch M. Stallings Sr. Until his demise, Bill was a devoted church member, a strong supporter of his pastor Bishop Robert H. Stallings Sr., and tireless worker in his church. Butler worked over 40 years at the U.S. Postal Service in New Haven, West Haven and Bridgeport, where he was building maintenance supervisor. He ended his career as supervisor of delivery services.

In his early years he was an exceptional golfer and long-time member of the Knickerbockers Golfing Club, winning or placing in numerous regional, state and local competitions. An avid New York Yankees fan for many years, he attended his last game at the new stadium in October 2010.

He will be sadly missed by family and friends alike and treasured in our hearts forever. He is survived by his daughters, Denise Butler and her husband Juergen Fenger of Germany; Tanya Butler of West Haven; and Shirletta Shaw (Mitchell) of Raleigh, N.C. He also leaves two grandsons, Justin Ashley Butler of West Haven and Brenden Shaw of Raleigh; and four great-grandchildren, Janae, Justin, and Jacob Butler, and Mekhi Shaw.

He was predeceased by his four older sisters: Aveline Herrnandez, Helen Colson Rose, Loree Butler, and Dorothy Mae Robinson. A host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends have been blessed to know him. A celebration of his life will take place Thursday, March 24, at 10:00 a.m.
at the Church of God and Saints of Christ, 109 Beers St., New Haven.

Friends may call Thursday at the church from 9 – 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place in the Connecticut Veteran’s Cemetery, 317 Bow Lane, Meriden. To leave a message of comfort to the Butler family, please visit www.howardkhillfuneralhome.com.
