(Updated) A car struck and killed a 50-year-old New Havener in a wheelchair on Dixwell Avenue early Saturday morning.
According to a press release sent out by police spokesperson Officer Christian Bruckhart, officers responded at around 3:43 a.m. to the 100 block of Dixwell for the report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
Upon arrival, officers found a 50-year-old man — later identified as Edward Fernandez — in the roadway suffering from injuries. City police and firefighters provided medical aid, and the man was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The operator of the car that struck the man remained on scene.
A preliminary investigation determined that Fernandez was in a wheelchair and was traveling south on Dixwell from Charles Street “in the southbound lane near the centerline.” He was then struck by the vehicle, which was also traveling south in the southbound lane on Dixwell.
