A fatal car crash in Las Vegas early Friday left New Haven Police Officer Joshua Castellano dead, a fellow city police officer arrested for driving under the influence — and a department in mourning for a colleague who did his job with passion.”

Castellano, who was 35 years old, was in a car driven by another officer, a fellow member of the academy class that graduated in 2015.

Las Vegas police have launched a criminal investigation in connection with the crash. The officer who was driving the car has been charged with driving under the influence and with reckless driving, according to Las Vegas criminal court records.

According to a Las Vegas police press release and a Saturday morning press conference held by New Haven’s top brass on the front steps of 1 Union Ave., there were four New Haven police officers in the vehicle at the time of the fatal crash.

Chief Dominguez.

Interim Police Chief Renee Dominguez said that, while Castellano died from his injuries, the three other city police officers involved sustained minor injuries” and were treated and released.” None of the surviving three officers are currently in the hospital.

In the academy, you knew that Josh had the thing,’ the thing that’s not teachable,” Dominguez said through tears on Saturday. She was backed by a dozen top police officers, while black and purple bunting hung above the department’s entrance and from the side of the building.

Dominguez said she was Castellano’s first supervisor after he graduated from the academy. He worked a walking beat in Westville/West Hills when she was the neighborhood’s district manager.

He worked very, very hard, and he was very, very passionate,” she said.

She said Castellano was so close with people he met while on that walking beat that, after learning about his death Friday, a woman who lives in Westville Manor texted Dominguez to say her heart was broken” upon learning about the fatal crash.

He did not only touch the men and women of this police department,” Dominguez said, but the community as well.”

Castellano was most recently assigned to the city police department’s Shooting Task Force. Before that, he worked as a beat officer in Westville and the Hill. Dominguez said that the police department has a city officer stationed with Castellano’s mom 24/7 right now in this time of mourning.

Dominguez also said that the driver of the vehicle has been placed on administrative leave. She said the NHPD will conduct its own investigation of the incident, even though it was off-duty conduct. She said that the other two officers in the car at the time who survived the crash will not be placed on administrative leave.

A Speeding Rolls Royce; Signs Of Impairment”

Police in Las Vegas received a call about the crash at 3:58 a.m., according to Las Vegas Police Officer Misael Parra. He said the car had crashed into a building on the 5000 block of Spring Mountain Road. He confirmed two occupants of the car were transported to the hospital, and one was declared deceased.

Later Friday afternoon, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Traffic Bureau sent out an email press release stating that the evidence at the scene, witness statements, and surveillance video of the collision indicated that a white 2020 Rolls Royce Cullinan had entered the intersection of West Spring Mountain Road and South Decatur Boulevard at a high rate of speed.”

The Rolls Royce’s driver began to lose control west of the intersection.

A 2021 white Ford Mustang was facing southbound in the private drive of an address on West Spring Mountain Road, waiting to enter the roadway.

The Rolls Royce exited the roadway to the right, colliding with the Ford Mustang,” that press release reads. The Rolls Royce continued westbound on West Spring Mountain Road and collided with roadside utility poles, landscaping, and a fire hydrant. The Rolls Royce overturned onto its roof, ejected the right front passenger from the vehicle, and up righted itself before coming to rest.”

Debris from the collision also collided with a third vehicle that was unoccupied and parked on West Spring Mountain Road.

Arriving medical personnel performed life-saving measures” at the scene and transported Castellano to University Medical Center’s Trauma Unit, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the Rolls Royce remained at the scene and showed signs of impairment. The driver was subsequently arrested for applicable charges.”

The press release indicates that there were six people in total in the Rolls Royce at the time of the crash. Dominguez confirmed that four of those men in the car were New Haven police officers. There were also two women from San Antonio, Texas, according to the Las Vegas press release.

According to Las Vegas criminal court records, the driver — a fellow city police officer — has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence, and with reckless driving.

A Heavy Heart”

Dominguez informed the New Haven rank and file of the fatal crash in a 2:06 p.m. email message Friday.

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to inform you that at approximately 0400 (PST) in Las Vegas, NV, Officer Joshua Castellano was involved in a fatal motor vehicle collision where he succumbed to his injuries. Several other officers were also in the vehicle and sustained non-life-threatening injuries,” she wrote.

Josh was a tremendous officer who proudly served the New Haven Police Department since 2014. We are all mourning this terrible loss. Please remember to check on your fellow officers during this extremely difficult time especially class 1914, and the members of the plain clothes unit of ISD.”

Among his assignments during his time on the force, Castellano served on the shootings task force and on a crime suppression beat in the Hill neighborhood.

A woman who lost her 23-year-old son to a fentanyl overdose in 2018 created a scholarship program for Hill youth in gratitude for how Castellano and a fellow officer handled the tragedy. They were incredibly compassionate and respectful. We’ve stayed in touch. We love these guys,” the woman, Lisa Deane, said at the time.

Chief Dominguez said Friday that her first priority” for the day is the well-being of other officers.” She will subsequently deal with any charges brought against the officer driving the vehicle involved in the crash.

We have policies that govern off duty and on duty behavior,” and we will follow those policies,” Dominguez said.

(The Independent is withholding the name of the driver in keeping with a policy of not identifying individuals accused or suspected of crimes unless we have their side of the story, a plea is entered, or a pressing public-interest question is at stake.)
