Contract Reached With Choice For New Schools Chief

Madeline Negrón.

The Board of Education has scheduled a special meeting for Wednesday afternoon to vote to ratify a contract with the school system’s new superintendent, according to a member of the search committee.

That new superintendent to be is Madeline Negrón, said Board of Education member Darnell Goldson, one of the people who chose her.

The search committee — which consisted of members of the Board of Education — agreed earlier this month by consensus, without a formal vote, to choose Negrón. Then it authorized board attorney Thomas Mooney to negotiate a contract with her. Those negotiations have now been successfully completed, and board members plan to confirm the contract with a vote at Wednesday’s meeting, according to Goldson.

I think it’s a good choice. It’s an exciting time for the school district,” Goldson said of the decision to hire Negrón.

Negrón — a former NHPS director of education and current Hartford Public Schools acting deputy superintendent — was one of three finalists out of a pool of 31 candidates to succeed Superintendent Iline Tracey, who is retiring at the end of the academic year.

If confirmed, Negrón will be the first Hispanic schools superintendent in a system in which a plurality of students are now of Hispanic descent.

From the beginning rumors swirled that Negrón was considered the inside favorite (click here and here for examples of concerns expressed), and board members promised a transparent process to keep the public informed.

Board members, including Mayor Justin Elicker, refused to confirm over the past week that they had chosen Negrón and authorized contract negotiations to begin. Elicker told the Independent last week that he felt the news should not have leaked out and the process” should be respected by not revealing the decision to hire Negrón. The decision has been an open secret within schools circles, including the candidates. Board of Ed President Yesenia Rivera did not respond to calls seeking comment over the past week. Board of Ed Vice President Matt Wilcox did respond, but declined to comment, saying he wanted to respect the process by not commenting.

As of this weekend, the Board of Ed quietly slipped an official notice” of Wednesday’s special meeting on an inside page of its website, without stating the purpose of the meeting: There will be a SPECIAL Board of Education meeting scheduled for Wednesday, April 19, 2023 at 4:30 PM.” A page on the same website claiming to offer information about the search process does not mention the special meeting or the decision.
