A young woman was distraught, and perched on the ledge of the roof of a downtown parking garage.
Officers Eric Aviles, Tonisha Berrios & Marelyn Vega arrived just in time.
They responded to a call about the incident on Aug. 6 at 5:49 p.m.
They arrived at the top of the garage to find the woman in danger and successfully coaxed her back onto the pavement, where they sat with her while awaiting medical help.
“You’re OK sweetheart,” one of the officers reassured the woman.
“What’s going on? You can talk to us. We’re here for you, OK?”
An ambulance crew arrived and brought her to the hospital.
On Monday police released the below body camera footage of part of the encounter. Warning: The video includes specific images of a suicide scene.
Weird. Almost exactly 4 years ago I did exactly the same thing in exactly the same place with a young woman intending to jump. It was during a hot as hell heatwave and on my birthday. It later took a bit of unpacking to comprehend the possibility of this lovely young woman missing all of the years I experienced.
