Can we get a date when Chief Dominguez submitted her application to Ansonia for the Chief Job? The title says she '... sought Ansonia Chief job' and the note beneath says 'While running NHPD'. She was appointed as 'acting chief' in March 2021, so was her application submitted it before or after her appointment? If it was before, then she did not seek the job while running NHPD. Just fact checking. Either way I don't see anything wrong as she is entitled to trying to secure employment.
Didn’t post my comment bc I said Dominguez was well qualified for Ansonia and pointed out your error in spelling lol? Hahaha bunch of clowns that work for your paper. F’ing nerds loll
[Paul: Thank you for posting your comment twice. As for your theory on why it did not immediately appear: We try to review and post comments every hour or two during the day. It takes longer at night and especially on weekends.]
What is this? Why is it news?
Which one among us has never applied for more than one job at the same time?
Why is the sensationalized headline brandished as if something sinister was afoot?
This hit piece has caused these words from the past echo in my ears, "At long last, have you no sense of decency? At long last?"
This is so disheartening. Dominguez tries to sell her loyalty to the city
of New Haven through her dedication to working with the community and having a more diverse police force. However, just like the last few Chiefs, she was already planning to jump. All of these promises are just smoke and mirrors. New Haven needs a Police Chief and Police Force that's more engaged with the community and doesnt use the pd as a stepping stone for their other aspirations. The NHPD has become a revolving door.
The timing of the publication of this story is highly suspect. I'd like to know "Who did it?". Has someone slipped the NHI this damaging info in an attempt to influence the outcome, or has NHI been aware of this all along, and just published this story to flex it's political muscles. Who even is the target, Dominguez or Elicker? A very sad state of affairs.
How dare she have career aspirations!!! What's with the photo and caption used with this "story"? I think we need major police reform in this country. For that reason I don't think it really matters who the chief is, I believe the results will always be the same in the current system. But this is just hack journalism. Do better.
What is wrong with applying for a better job than the one you have now in another district, is Ms. Dominguez not allowed to strive for more money and better benefits in her career?
However, The Independent missed the real story. She (and another candidate) were AUTOMATICALLY eliminated from the Ansonia job "despite her vast experience in law enforcement" because she did not qualify as she had not been a chief or second in command for long enough. Sgt. Vincent Orlando is the president of the Ansonia police officers union said "rank and file officers play NO ROLE in the police chief search", but Orlando said "officers want the police commission to make a decision ASAP because the department is UNDERSATFFED and a permanent chief is NEEDED to address the problem. Too many officers are being required to work double shifts and to work on their days off, Orlando said, and it’s hurting morale".
Isn't that the bigger story???? Bureaucrats have far too much power and control yet those that actually have to do the work and enforce our laws are not given enough control or voice in the process - does this sound right to anyone? In the private sector, we do not AUTOMATICALLY disqualify someone for an executive, officer, or senior position just because they never held the same position in another company - that is NUTS - and wreaks of politics!
Yes, the CEO and Board Members look carefully at overall experience \ qualifications but more importantly, we look towards merit and accomplishment. We also monitor their performance after they are hired and they are QUICKLY FIRED if they can't do the job or lose confidence from the teams doing the work. Seems like a fair deal for a SENIOR MANAGER, do the job well and get rewarded, don't and get fired. Seem simple enough to me.
So what? So she applied for another position when she had only a temporary position in the NHPD. With all the hoopla about the mayor appointing her from the alders and some ministers and community activists, why wouldn’t she apply for another job elsewhere, because there is no guarantee that her name being submitted a second time by the mayor will be successful, no matter how much she tries to appease her critics. And the rabble rousers are now wanting to do a National search for a candidate, which will dishearten NHPD members from feeling that they will be promoted if they don’t fit what the alders or the ministers or the community activists are looking for. I would guess that there will be many more NHPD who are eligible for retirement moving on as soon as they’re able to do so, because what’s the point in being paid less than in the suburbs, under more dangerous and stressful conditions, if there is no hope in being able to be promoted from within the ranks.
Diversity we say? isn't she diverse enough New Haven? all these men coming out to protest her appointment. So surprised to see so many ladies coming out to protest her appointment. Ladies help elevate her, I cannot think of a better person to get this job. We as females in the workforce for 20 years, we work and work and work just to stay in the job we love, now it's time to get promoted we have persons saying don't promote her; how demoralizing. We are going to do a national search costing money and she is qualified, oh I forgot the Alders as rolling in dough per Yale. Get her promoted, Woman Power.
She's in a temporary position it would be crazy not to look for a permanent position. I'm all for having the first woman police chief in New Haven but I guess that isn't diverse enough. She's an interim chief she can't come in swinging with changes. A good leader makes changes slowly and with intent.
First off it is sad how this is playing out. Only thing I see that this is newsworthy is she told the alders and her statements on how much she is committed to New Haven and clearly that is not the case. She is basically like anyone else she is ready to take on another opportunity and there is nothing wrong with that. I believe if she would’ve worded that way this about her applying somewhere else would NOT make a difference. I don’t believe her race should be a factor if she is qualified. Also Ansonia she doesn’t qualify is New Haven requirements less?
As someone who gets my local news from the NHI and usually appreciate the lack of bias, I am very disappointed by the tone and timing of this article. As it doesn’t list the names of all of the applicants, why does it include Ms. Dominguez? The only thing that makes her different from the other applicants for the Ansonia position is because she is in the running for the Chief position of the NHPD and this is the “New Haven” Independent. It’s clear this article is meant to lead one to the conclusion she will take a position out of the NHPD, if a better one is offered. I am embarrassed and hurt by the way this woman is being treated by some of our Alders and this publication. Cover newsworthy articles about her. Ask worthy questions. But insinuations and humiliation send a terrible message to young woman following this in hopes she can break though the glass ceiling. The exact opposite of the message she wanted to send to young woman. And her career and dedication to our city deserves more respect. This article is something I would expect from Fox News. And that isn’t a compliment
Uhm… didn’t we do a national search to replace the superintendent for our schools? And how did that turn out? Disaster. Instead, we had to turn to one of our local, experienced, New Haven –-based professionals to take over and do what that national search candidate couldn’t. Alders should learn from their mistakes. Clearly the current mayor already has.
What’s the criteria to be chief in New Haven? The ceremonial importance of being the first woman chief aside, if she doesn’t have the qualifications or experience to even be in the running for Ansonia, why is she being considered for New Haven? The crime, the unsolved murders, the issues within the department…. Far too vast for the chief to figure things out as they go.
Since the Independent is so high on misspelled words lately, your author states she worked for NHFD. It’s the NHPD. Anyhow, Ansonia said no, but let me tell you that without even knowing the other candidates she would be the best choice for Ansonia. Keep trying to bring Dominguez down, it won’t work. She’s as good as it gets as a Top Cop. Her work speaks for itself.
