G Cafe Opening Tweed Outpost

Sean Scanlon tried his first-ever cup of coffee Wednesday — after toasting a deal to bring an outpost of New Haven’s popular G Cafe to the growing airport he oversees.

Scanlon tried that cup of espresso and engaged in that toast around noon at G Cafe on Orange Street.

Andrea Corazzini brewed the espresso for him. Corazzini owns G Cafe, along with a second cafe-bakery in Branford and a bakery on Hamilton Street. (Click here for a previous story about his dramatic backstory and the launch of his New Haven businesses.)

The espresso toast took place four hours before a meeting of the Tweed New Haven Airport Authority, for which Scanlon serves as executive director. The authority voted to approve a one-year lease with Corazzini to open a 400 square-foot version of the popular G Cafe in Tweed’s newly renovated terminal.

The goal is to have the cafe-bakery open in time for the commencement of daily flights to and from Tweed and Florida on Nov. 3 as part of a recently approved airport expansion.

The bakery-cafe will be located in the waiting area past the security station. It will offer fresh coffee and tea as well as quiche, muffins, pretzel bagels, and bread baked that morning at the Hamilton Street mothership. A second grab-and-go spot will be located by the gate for passengers who want a last-minute nosh before boarding.

Seasonal favorites like panettone and stollen are also on the menu.

At first the plan is to operate the Tweed Cafe G from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for the initial schedule of three daily flights, with hours probably expanding along with the planned growth of the flight schedule.

It will be the first time in 30 to 40 years that Tweed travelers will have access to a food and beverage operations instead of just vending machines, Scanlon said.

We wanted to have someone local. Because it’s a local airport,” Scanlon said of the decision to contract with G Cafe.

G Cafe will hire five full-timers for the operation, bringing its total workforce at all locations to 36, according to Corazzini.

We are thrilled for the challenge,” Corazzini said.

The new venture reminds Corazzini of when he would fly back to his native Italy after moving to Venezuela as an adult. People would board the plane ferrying fresh loaves of bread they were proud of from their various provinces. The plane smelled great.

Maybe we can have people in New Haven personally bringing New Haven bread to their friends in Florida,” he said.

Tweed travelers stopping by G Cafe will also start their mornings fueled with an espresso jolt — as Scanlon discovered Wednesday when Corazzini brewed him a cup.

Is this the moment I admit to you I’ve never drunk a cup of coffee in my life?” remarked Scanlon, a habitual tea drinker.

A toast to our new adventure!” Corazzini proclaimed as he and Scanlon clinked their cups.

Scanlon’s verdict?

Strong!”
