Gunshots Fired Outside Preschool During Dismissal

Scene outside the school after the shooting.

Someone leaning out of a passing vehicle sprayed the lot in front of Dr. Reginald Mayo Early Learning Center at dismissal time Tuesday afternoon, sending the school into lockdown.

The incident occurred at 2:26 p.m.

It is believed that at least 15 bullets were fired as the vehicle drove away.

Several people were seen running in different directions afterward.

No one was reported injured, said school district spokesperson Justin Harmon.

Buses were lined up for dismissal at the time.

Teachers and students were outside putting students on buses when the shots happened,” said one teacher, who asked to remain anonymous. There were some students already on buses, and the rest of the students were rushed inside safely by staff members.” The buses remained parked in the driveway with the students on board.

Assistant Police Chief Karl Jacobson said Principal Monique Brunson and her staff did an amazing job” as soon as they heard the shots, locking down the school and making sure everyone remained safe.

Police arrived, closed off the block of Goffe Street by the school, near Orchard Street. They later gave the all-clear, and the rest of the kids were ushered onto the buses in safety.

We’re going to have police presence out here every day until you feel safe,” Jacobson promised officials at the school.
