Hamden High is closed through Friday after school officials were informed Thursday night of a gun violence threat that had been made online.

The decision to keep kids and staff home came days after a student was stabbed just off of Hamden High’s campus and two months after another student brought a loaded handgun into the school.

The decision was made out of an abundance of caution” by Hamden school officials, the Hamden Police Department, and Mayor Lauren Garrett.

I am committed to the safety of our schools and I take every threat seriously,” Garrett wrote Friday morning. I want to thank the Hamden Police Department and Hamden school officials for their swift response to ensure the safety of our students and staff… I applaud the students who were proactive about their safety and reached out to the police, administration, and parents about this threat.”

The police were alerted of the threat around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, and immediately launched an investigation.

Garrett asked anyone with information about the threat to contact Hamden police at 203 – 230-4000.

Police spokesperson Sean Dolan noted that police presence has already been increased at Hamden High School over the past few weeks, and said the department will continue with those efforts.” Additional police patrols will monitor other schools across town.
