A 63-year-old pedestrian was critically injured after being struck by a car while walking across Chapel Street downtown Tuesday morning.
That’s according to a press release posted on the social media site X on Wednesday morning by the New Haven Police Department (NHPD).
That press release states that, at 9:01 a.m. Tuesday, city police officers were dispatched to the area of Chapel Street and Temple Street for the report of a pedestrian struck.
“The vehicle involved fled the scene following the collision,” the press release states.
Upon arrival, officers found the victim, a 63-year-old Wallingford resident, “lying in the roadway on Chapel Street suffering from significant injuries.”
City firefighters and American Medical Response personnel arrived on scene and transported the victim to Yale New Haven Hospital for treatment. “He is currently in critical condition.” City police spokesperson Officer Christian Bruckhart told the Independent on Thursday that the latest he had heard was that his injuries are no longer life threatening.
Witnesses on the scene told police that “the offending vehicle struck the pedestrian as he was crossing Chapel Street, then drove away on Temple Street. The vehicle is described as a grey 4 door Honda.” The Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and is actively investigating.
