Teen Shot Dead

(Updated) Someone shot and killed an 18-year-old from Stratford in the Dixwell neighborhood early Sunday morning.

According to a press release posted to the city police department’s X account Sunday afternoon, city police officers were dispatched to the area of Tilton Street and Mansfield Street at around 2:47 a.m. for the report of a person shot.

Upon arrival, officers found the victim, an 18-year-old from Stratford, lying on the sidewalk.

On Monday, police identified the victim as Jhavare Smith.

Smith was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital’s York Street campus, where he died from his injuries.

Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have information valuable to investigators to call detectives at 203 – 946-6304 or through the department’s anonymous tip line at 866 – 888-TIPS (8477).

In a separate post on X, at 9:05 a.m. Sunday, the police department announced that officers also responded to a nonfatal shooting on Crown Street at 2:29 a.m. Sunday. In that incident, a 22-year-old woman was struck in the foot.

On Monday, city police spokesperson Officer Christian Bruckhart said that Smith and the 22-year-old woman who was shot on Crown Street were both at the same Crown Street club, Secrets, earlier in the night. There’s no indication that they know each other” or that the two shootings were related, Bruckhart said, but police are investigating.

He said there was a lot of activity in that area” — meaning, a lot of fights in that Crown Street club corridor Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Bruckhart said that Smith, the 18-year-old, went to an after hours party” at a residence on Tilton Street after his time at Secrets. Police are still trying to figure out what happened that led to the fatal shooting. He said police found two separate calibers” at the scene — implying that there were two different firearms used. He said there have been no arrests made yet.

Smith’s shooting death marks New Haven’s eighth homicide so far this year. He is also the second teen to be shot and killed in the city in two months, following the April 15 homicide of 15-year-old Aaron Robinson in the Hill.
