Word On The Street: Sisterhood Is Wow-erful

Lauren had a dual mission as she loaded her stuff Wednesday morning into a friend’s car headed for campus.

She loaded in books for mission one: Attending her Philosophy of Education course. A week into the semester, the Yale junior is enjoying the class so far. She’s figuring out if she wants to become a teacher one day.

She also loaded in balloons for mission two: Helping run a rush night event after dinner for Alpha Phi, her sorority.

Mission two is even closer to her heart. Belonging to a sorority, which she rushed by Zoom her first year during the isolated remote-learning earlier phase of the Covid-19 pandemic, has proved to be the hallmark” of her university experience.

Yale is like a big and scary place. It’s nice to have, especially, girl friends. These are my best girl friends,” Lauren (who chose to be identified by only her first name) said during a conversation on Edgewood Avenue on the Word on the Street” segment of WNHH FM’s LoveBabz LoveTalk” program.

Yale’s four sororities are smaller, less serious” communities than their counterparts at larger schools, Lauren said. Members of all four are friends. We’re just a great bunch of girls who like to hang out and spend time together.”

Wednesday night, first-years will visit each of the four societies to learn more, then over a couple of days figure out in a mutual process where they fit best.

Lauren was looking forward to meeting prospective new sorors and talking up Alpha Phi. It’s like the best feeling to be able to let freshman girls know” that a supportive, fun oasis awaits them amid the ivy.

You can watch the full conversation with Lauren on the Word on the Street” segment of WNHHFM’s LoveBabz LoveTalk” program in the video above.
