When New Haven Public Schools transitions to a hybrid of in-person and remote classes, around 8,800 students of the 20,000 in the district will stay remote-only.

This is the result of the latest form put out by the district that asked families whether they want to continue to learn entirely from home after the transition, according to Superintendent Iline Tracey. The default option is returning to school between two and four days a week.

Tracey is settling final details in the last weeks before New Haven schools reopen on Nov. 9, for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic closed schools in March.

The number of students who want to learn remotely has stayed steady from previous surveys. The percentage — 44 percent — is lower now than in the surveys, where those not responding were assumed to more or less agree with those who did.

We will continue to monitor the numbers,” Tracey said by email.
