Can you please visualize where this land is on a map? Is this the storage area that is most likely responsible for the terrible smell on the highway where it splits from 95S to 91N?

But I thought the State had no money. Can anyone explain how we keep spending when we are in deficit? I guess I don't understand how you keep shopping when your bank account is empty. A nice series on this would be very educational and helpful . You can't make solutions if you don't understand how things work in the government financing area

Great news, but will they be allowed to do anything that might make noise, create well paid jobs? Or will any expansion be fought and limited to bike and "green-space" or the usual pictures of future apartment development? Will we actually see a train roll over the Tomlinson Bridge?

NHPLEB, as the article notes, the area was used to store construction materials. I very much doubt it generated any smells. A better bet is the nearby oil terminals.

JCFremont, the port area, including the streets mentioned in the article, are zoned IH (heavy industrial). Manufacturing and related uses are allowed there as of right. The Board of Alders could conceivably rezone the area. But given its past and present uses, I suspect the soil is contaminated, making residential redevelopment unlikely.

Alabama Street is a useful way to bike to the East Shore (not scenic, but flat). You could install bike lanes on the street while still having plenty of room for the trucks that use it to get to the port.

NHPLEB: Of all the things on the state bond agenda, this likely made the most sense. It's a real investment in a capital item that should help the economy, unless, as JCFremont anticipates, New Haven blocks growth and good jobs because it might be noisy or smell. Unfortuantely,t eh state is still borrowing for stupid stuff, adding to its huge debt for unneeded things like over $2 million for the trolley museum, the money for the parking garages which should be generated from the garages themselves (a backhanded way of bailing out New Haven), the children's museum, and the toll "study" at $10 million when we already have a study. (Personally, I am tired of foreigners cluttering up our highways and paying nothing for them.)

@Kevin, Thank you for the info. I have biked down the industrial back roads to East Shore Park, yes a bike lane can be installed but my fear is if the port wants to expand or a real industrial business wants to expand the area Ol' NIMBY will rise. Another question is the East Street industrial area? I'm sure the cry of children being crushed under freight trains, and chocking as cars idle on Grand Ave if rail traffic increases on the P&W line. I have seen Tankers docking on the west side of the harbor, will that be restricted when the boathouse opens? It was boat traffic in the harbor caused Yale to move out of the original house in 1923.
