Alleged Mailbox Thieves Crash Into CT Transit Bus

The driver of an alleged mailbox-thieving crew was clinging to life Monday after running a stop sign — and crashing into a CT Transit bus.

So reported Hamden police spokesperson Detective Sean J. Dolan.

Here is what Dolan reported in a press release, based on a preliminary investigation:

The incident occurred at Whitney Avenue and Huntington Circle around 10 a.m.

Three people, including the driver, were in a car, stealing mail from mailboxes.”

The driver turned in front of the bus on Whitney Avenue from Huntington Circle, after failing to stop at a stop sign.”

The driver was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.” The two passengers fled the scene, and were caught later with the help of Cheshire cops. One of the passengers was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries,” as was the CT Transit bus driver.

One passenger, a 21-year-old Bronx man, was held on $25,000 bond, charged with interfering with police and sixth-degree conspiracy to commit larceny. The police are continuing to investigate the incident and expect to make more arrests.
