San Francisco now has something in common with New Haven — a Believe in People mural.
The anonymous muralist —whose works enlivened New Haven’s streetscape and skyscrape over the past five years, and provoking passionate debate along the way — painted the pictured mural, “Self Consuming Self — Dave,” on the side of the Hostelling International San Francisco City Center building at 685 Ellis St.
He had the following information sent to the Independent:
“To maintain anonymity, BiP arranged the mural through a representative and painted exclusively at night with a small headlamp. The mural is part of a larger series BiP will be orchestrating over the new few years in the Bay Area, with locations set to include Oakland and South San Francisco as well. Buildings are welcome to apply for inclusion in the series at [email protected]. …
“The piece was with permission but without any discussion of content. Hostelling International — USA served as excellent partners in creating a situation where BiP was free to create whatever he saw fit and knew he would have support.
“BiP has re-based himself in San Francisco but will also be predominantly mobile and focusing on international expansion. …
“‘From Molly Salyer, General Manager of HI San Francisco City Center: ‘HI San Francisco City Center is grateful for this opportunity to support local art and artists. We’re thrilled to help bring such a beautiful work to our neighborhood, and look forward to sharing this unique experience with travelers from around the world for years to come.’”
Hey BIP,
Really Great Piece, as was the one in China.
So, Why did we get all the crap?
I guess you were developing (something).
Is that horrible broken door with the middle finger at Cafe Nine, which poses as art, the last piece we will see of yours in New Haven ??
My guess is not -- if the price is right.
I guess we should be honored that you gifted some of your earlier art to our fair city as a way to jumpstart your career.
I hope you are paying NHI some royalties for their exclusive coverage.
