Box Banned

Malloy: Rell’s fault.

Young people looking to get a start in government through the governor’s office will no longer be greeted with a question about their criminal backgrounds.

Until this past week, the application for gubernatorial internships asked: ““Have you ever been arrested or convicted of breaking the law?”

That contradicted state law — and the thrust of Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s Second Chance Society” initiative, which emphasizes giving ex-offenders a shot at rebuilding their lives. The state passed a ban the box” law in 2010 that required such questions to be omitted from job applications.

The administration revised the form and posted this new one after this article reported on the matter. The new form does not ask about prior arrests or convictions.

At a New Haven press conference Wednesday, Malloy said the inclusion of the question before was an oversight.

I used [predecessor Gov.] Jodi Rell’s application,” he said.

He added: I also point out to you that internships are not jobs.”
