Brennan Declines Ed Board Nomination

Liam Brennan on MSNBC.

Liam Brennan, who is not running for mayor, is also not going to sit on the Board of Education.

The former federal prosecutor — who helped re-send former Gov. John Rowland to prison — told the Independent Thursday that he has decided to decline a nomination to serve as a school board member. Mayor Toni Harp had forwarded Brennan’s nomination to the Board of Alders, which had planned to hold a confirmation hearing and then vote on whether to approve his selection.

I was very honored by the nomination,” said Brennan, a public school parent who has been active in education advocacy. But it happened just as I was in the final discussions for a new job.”

That new job is executive director of the Connecticut Veterans Legal Center (CVLC). He starts that job on March 4, leaving his current staff position at New Haven Legal Assistance Association.

I think the commitment warranted by both endeavors, at least right now, would not permit me to give the time that both deserve,” Brennan said of the ed board and CVLC positions.

Brennan had held discussions late last year exploring a run for mayor in 2019. He ultimately decided not to pursue that run.

I’m still definitely not running for mayor,” he confirmed on Thursday.

The alders plan to hold a confirmation hearing for a second person Mayor Harp has nominated for the Board of Education, Yesina Rivera.
