Yale New Haven Hospital landed over $114.7 million in federal coronavirus-related aid this month, according to newly published data on which hospitals have benefited from billions of dollars of federal health care-targeted Covid-19 relief.

YNHH received that money as part of two grants disbursed by the federal Department of Health and Human Services’s (HHS) Health Resources and Services Administration through the $2.2 trillion CARES Act and the $484 billion Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act.

The payments are recorded on the HHS Provider Relief Fund databases located here and here, and are included in an analysis by the research group Good Jobs First on how the federal government has distributed Covid-19 relief so far.

The databases indicate that Yale New Haven Hospital received a $59,728,989 federal grant on May 8 and a $54,994,143 federal grant on May 14, totaling over $114 million for the month.

Throughout this crisis our first and only priority has been to care for our patients,” YNHH Senior Vice President, Public Affairs Vin Petrini (pictured) told the Independent in an email statement.

At the onset of the pandemic we quickly cleared out hospital beds and canceled procedures to address the challenge of the virus head on. That lost volume, along with significant costs associated with addressing COVID-19, continues today and has generated significant operating losses. But we never abandoned our mission to care for all of our patients during this difficult time and we never furloughed or laid off staff despite the financial challenges.

We are simply using the federal funds to offset significant operating losses associated with the pandemic. There remains a significant amount of uncertainty facing all hospitals as we look to return to normalized services in the months ahead so it is difficult to predict where we will end up from a financial perspective. However, we are extremely proud of the dedicated caregivers that continue [to] serve at the front line of this pandemic.”

The Covid-19 relief laws provided $175 billion in aid for health care institutions and front line health care providers. The New York Times recently reported that HHS has disbursed $72 billion of those funds so far, with much of it going to some of the wealthiest hospitals in the nation.

YNHH’s $59 million grant came as part of a high-impact allocation” targeted at hospitals with with disproportionately high numbers of patients on Medicare, while the $54 million grant came as part of a general allocation from HHS’s Provider Relief Fund.

YNHH’s New Haven hospital campuses weren’t the only Yale New Haven Health Systems facilities to receive aid through the newly available federal coronavirus-related funding. YNHHS operates seven hospital campuses throughout Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Greenwich Hospital received $24,137,009 on May 8 and $7,215,030 on May 14. Bridgeport Hospital received $30,272,148 on May 8.

The regional health system’s CEO, Marna Borgstrom, has said during numerous recent virtual town halls that YNHHS has lost a significant amount of revenue thanks to the pause put on elective procedures during the Covid-19 pandemic. The hospital has also incurred new costs by making available more intensive care unit (ICU) beds for coronavirus patients, ramping up Covid-19 testing, and securing adequate supplies of personal protective equipment like respirators, masks, gloves, face shields, and gowns. Borgstrom has estimated that the hospital system is losing $1.5 million a day during the crisis.

According to YNHHS’s 2018 annual report, the regional hospital system ended that fiscal year with $4.6 billion in net revenue. That same year’s report for Yale New Haven Hospital showed that the local hospital had an operating surplus of $245.7 million.
