The Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce honored three local movers and shakers at its annual meeting and business leadership awards event: Howard K. Hill, Carlton Highsmith, and Heather LaTorra.

The event took place Thursday afternoon at the Omni Hotel on Temple Street.

The chamber named Hill its new board chair. Hill owns Howard K. Hill Funeral Services and is a leading philanthropist, including as founder of the Prosperity Foundation.

Carlton Highsmith, founder of Specialized Packaging Group (which was named in 2009 as the state’s largest minority-owned firm) and board chair of ConnCAT and ConnCORP, received the chamber’s William Lanson Community Leadership Award. ConnCORP is in the process or rebuilding Dixwell Plaza into a mixed-use development.

LaTorra, president and CEO of Marrakech, Inc., was inducted as new vice-chair of the Chamber board.

The Chamber also raffled off at the event free tickets for the upcoming inaugural Avelo Airlines flight to Florida from Tweed New Haven Airport.
